KÜNDEKÂRİ SÖKME VE YENİDEN OLUŞTURMA SÜREÇLERİNDE 7. SINIF ÖĞRENCİLERİNİN UZAMSAL YETENEKLERİ
SPATIAL ABILITIES OF SEVENTH-GRADE STUDENTS IN DISASSEMBLING AND REASSEMBLING KÜNDEKÂRİ
Abstract
This study examines the spatial abilities that seventh-grade students with differing levels of spatial visualization employ while disassembling and reassembling kündekâri, a traditional interlocking woodwork, and compares the two phases. A holistic multiple-case design was adopted. The Spatial Visualization Test was administered to 156 seventh graders in Turgutlu, Manisa, in 2025–2026; low, medium and high groups were formed using Kelley’s 27% criterion, and three students from each group were randomly selected (N = 9). Data were collected through video-recorded observations of the disassembly and reassembly of three kündekâri models differing in the number and arrangement of pieces, a rubric-based observation form and semi-structured interviews, and were analysed through content analysis. During disassembly, students most often analysed the structure visually before taking it apart, likened the whole to a familiar shape, and inferred hidden voids. During reassembly, they partitioned the pieces into subgroups of three, used the internal geometry as a reference, and discovered the orientation rule between groups. Disassembly proved analytic and perceptually supported, whereas reassembly was synthetic and memory-loaded; failures mostly stemmed from not retaining the representation formed during disassembly. Scores separated by spatial visualization level only at first encounter.
